Arc is a platform designed for independent film production companies to manage schedules and budgets while tracking data from shooting activities. Currently, the process relies on manual entry methods, the call sheets. Our app aimed to test the following hypothesis: Can a platform reduce input errors and improve overall awareness of production status by displaying it on a dashboard?
The requirement for this integrated project at Langara, was to create an innovative full-stack web application with data visualization. We choose to create an app for movie's industry, because the majority of Canadian film production is done by independent companies, and Vancouver, is the third largest film hub in North America.
Considering a business analysis, Arc is the only platform among its 3 main competitors that offers a dashboard view, shooting equipment management, and customizable fields, reports, and download options.
For Arc's users, the proposed application is estimated improve management by providing an intuitive and accessible dashboard that informs producers about the movie's status in less than a minute.
In our presentation, the Arc application won the "Most Ready to Market" award, and we also had the opportunity to present the project again at the Creative Arts & Industries Conference at Langara College.
By applying agile methodology, using Jira to manage sprints, and collaborating with developers, we were able to develop a functioning MVP with Next.js.
The project followed the design thinking framework which made the process more structured and gave us agency to make decisions and move foward.
By making mistakes in distributing different workloads to designers, I learned the importance of checking in with the team more frequently and planning for smaller deliverables.
Unfortunately, with only three contacts from the film industry and due to the nature of this project, we are not showing any metrics for Arc.
